PivotGridControl automatically supports hints (tooltips) for field headers, field values and cells. Hints are displayed if text within an element's region is clipped. Methods provided by Pivot Grid Control allow you to customize settings used to format text within tooltips. To control contents and appearance settings of hints use the Tooltip Controller component.

Expanded Customizing Tooltips via the Tooltip Controller

Tooltips are managed by the ToolTipController component, which provides means to customize the appearances and behavior of hints. To learn how to use this component, refer to the following topic from the WinForms Common Concepts section.

Expanded PivotGrid-Specific Options

By default, hints are displayed when an end-user hovers the mouse pointer over a visual element (a field header or cell, for example) whose contents is truncated. The image below shows the hint that is shown for a field header whose caption is truncated.

Pivot Grid provides a set of options that specify which elements can display hints. To access these options use the PivotGridControl.OptionsHint property. The table below lists hint options along with their descriptions.

Option Description
PivotGridOptionsHint.ShowCellHints Specifies whether or not hints are displayed for cells with truncated content.
PivotGridOptionsHint.ShowHeaderHints Specifies whether or not hints are displayed for field headers that have truncated captions.
PivotGridOptionsHint.ShowValueHints Specifies whether or not hints are displayed for field values with truncated content.

It is also possible to specify hints that will be displayed instead of the default ones. Each field has the PivotGridField.ToolTips property. This property returns an object allowing you to specify hints displayed for a header and values of the field. Note that these hints are displayed when an end-user hovers over the field header or value with a mouse.

To provide centralized management for the appearance and behavior of hints displayed by DevExpress controls or their elements, use the ToolTipController component. It allows you to customize hint appearances, specify an icon displayed within hints and customize time intervals defining when to invoke/hide a hint, etc.
