Column and Card Field Overview

The Grid Control control displays information from data sources in its Views. For instance, in Grid Views, data fields are represented as columns and records are displayed as rows. In Card Views and Layout Views, records are represented as cards and data fields are represented as card fields, arranged in a specific manner within a card.

Columns and card fields in Views are encapsulated by specific objects. Columns (in Grid Views) and card fields (in Card Views) are represented by GridColumn objects. In Layout Views, card fields are represented by LayoutViewColumn objects (GridColumn descendants). In Banded and Advanced Banded Grid Views, columns are represented by BandedGridColumn objects (GridColumn descendants). The following image shows the relationship between Views and column objects.

Expanded How Columns and Card Fields are Displayed

Grid Views and Banded Grid Views display data in a tabular format, with column captions at the top and cell values below.

An Advanced Banded Grid View allows you to position column headers in several lines. As a result, column cells are not always initially located one under another:

Card Views and Layout Views display data records using cards. Each card contains fields consisting of caption and value regions. Card field captions are the same for all cards. The image below illustrates a sample Card View.

Card Views arrange card fields one under another, while Layout Views support multiple field layouts. A sample Layout View is shown below.
