Find and Replace Dialog

The Find and Replace dialog allows end-users to search for a specific word or phrase in a document (the Find tab of the dialog) or search for a specific text and automatically replace it with a specified string (the Replace tab of the dialog).

An end-user can invoke the Find and Replace dialog with active Find tab by pressing CTRL+F and can invoke the dialog with an active Replace tab by pressing the CTRL+H.

You can also provide end-users with the capability to invoke the Find and Replace dialog via the Editing toolbar or Ribbon page group. To do this, provide Bars or Ribbon UI for the RichEditControl (see How to: Create a Simple Word Processor with a Bar UI or How to: Create a Simple Word Processor with a Ribbon UI) and create the Editing toolbar or Ribbon page group from the Home group of bars.

To invoke the dialog, you can use the FindCommand and ReplaceCommand commands, or RichEditControl.ShowSearchForm and RichEditControl.ShowReplaceForm methods. The ShowSearchForm and ShowReplaceForm methods trigger the RichEditControl.SearchFormShowing event that you can handle to perform required actions before a search form is displayed.

To programmatically perform text search and replacement in the document, you can use the SubDocument.ReplaceAll, SubDocument.FindAll, and SubDocument.StartSearch methods, and the ISearchResult interface.

To customize the default Find and Replace dialog (modify captions, set default dialog values, implement custom validation, etc.) or substitute it with completely new dialog, handle the RichEditControl.SearchFormShowing event. To get an example of the dialog replacement, refer to the How to: Customize the Search Form document.
